About pool decking

A deck beside a pool works harder than most.

It is wet, walked on barefoot and in full sun, and it sits next to a barrier that has to meet the pool safety rules. Our pool-side work includes a composite deck with an in-ground spa set into it and a built-in bench in Dundas, a curved deck with wide steps beside a pool in Bellevue Hill, and a merbau deck extended out over a pool coping.

We plan a pool deck around three things: where the water goes, how the deck meets the pool edge, and what it does to the pool fence. Boards are gapped so water drains through, the frame is kept off wet ground, and pumps, filters and spa equipment stay reachable through a hatch where needed.

If you are unsure between timber and composite around the pool, we can talk through how each handles water, heat and bare feet in your space.

Pool deck options

  1. 01

    Composite

Doesn't splinter or need oiling, which suits bare feet. Choose a lighter colour, because dark boards get hot.

  2. 02

    Merbau and other hardwoods

A natural feel underfoot, and the boards can be sanded back. They need regular oiling, and tannin from new boards can mark pale coping.

  3. 03

    Spa surrounds

Decks built up to an in-ground spa with a neat cut-out at the edge, like our Dundas job.

  4. 04

    Decks over the coping

Taking the deck out over the pool coping makes the edge feel more generous. How the edge is supported needs planning on site.

  5. 05

    Built-in seating

Benches along a fence or the deck edge, as at Dundas, placed so they stay clear of the pool barrier.

02Boards
Looks
Wood fibre and plastic with a hard outer shell. Holds its colour far longer than bare timber.
Upkeep
A wash now and then. No oiling, and no splinters.
Good to know
Dark boards get hot in full afternoon sun, and a deep scratch can’t be sanded out.

What changes a pool deck

  1. The pool barrier

The NSW pool barrier rules include a zone around the fence that must stay clear of anything a child could climb. A deck, step, planter or bench in the wrong spot can make a compliant fence non-compliant.

  2. Water and fixings

Chlorine and salt water are hard on metal. Stainless steel fixings are the safer choice close to the water.

  3. Heat and grip

Grooved or textured boards give better grip. Lighter colours keep the surface cooler for bare feet.

  4. Equipment access

Pumps, filters and pipes under or beside the deck need a removable panel or hatch so they can be serviced.

  • “I've found my new carpenter! Haz did a fabulous job of doing all new balustrading on my back deck. He was very precise with his fitting and measurements and also went out of his way to help me with 2 other little jobs I needed to do before selling my house. What he did for me was a tremendous help and I'm so grateful. Look no further than Haz. He is the kindest and the best!”

  • “I would recommend Timbaland to my friends, and would try to get them again if work later comes up. We got them to do our backyard deck. And Haz has been professional and easy to deal with from the beginning. He explains the work and his pricing really well. He’s efficient and his quality of work is very commendable. Extremely happy with their work.”

Questions

What customers ask us

Will a new deck affect my pool fence compliance?

It can. The pool barrier rules set a minimum fence height measured from the finished ground, and a clear zone around the barrier with nothing climbable in it. A deck that raises the ground beside the fence, or a bench or step near it, can break those rules. We plan the deck around the fence, and any change to the barrier itself needs checking by your council or an accredited certifier.

Is timber or composite better around a pool?

Composite doesn't splinter and needs no oiling, which suits wet, barefoot areas, but darker colours get hot. Hardwood stays cooler and feels natural, but needs regular oiling and can mark pale coping when new. We bring boards to look at in your pool area.

Can you build a deck around a spa?

Yes. In Dundas we built a composite deck around an in-ground spa, with a built-in bench along the fence. The cut-out and any access panels are planned before the boards go down.

Can a deck be extended over the pool coping?

Yes, we have extended a merbau deck out over a pool coping. How it is supported at the edge depends on the pool and the coping, so we look at it on site first.
