About composite decking

Most composite boards are made from wood fibre and plastic, often with a hard outer shell.

They don't need oiling, they don't splinter and they hold their colour far longer than bare timber. Our composite jobs include the curved two-level deck around trees in North Ryde, a spa deck with a built-in bench in Dundas, a balcony and rooftop terrace in Birchgrove, and a side-passage deck in Ashfield.

The boards on our jobs have included Trex, NewTechWood, Eva Last, Modelo and Dura Life. Each brand has its own clips, board profiles and installation guide, and the frame underneath has to suit them: joist spacing, airflow under the deck and the gaps at board ends. We set the frame out to the guide for the board you choose.

Composite isn't right for every deck. Dark boards get hot in full afternoon sun, and a deep scratch can't be sanded out the way it can on timber. We go through these trade-offs on site, with the boards in front of you, before you decide.

    Trex

A capped composite board from the United States, used on our Birchgrove, Bellevue Hill, Sandringham, Botany and North Ryde jobs. Our Trex page has more detail.

  2. 02

NewTechWood, Eva Last, Modelo and Dura Life

Other brands seen on our Sydney jobs, each with its own colours, board widths and clip system.

  3. 03

    ModWood, Millboard and Ekodeck

Brands people often ask us about. Each has its own fixing system and guide; we can compare them with you and quote the one you prefer.

  4. 04

    Hidden clips or face fixing

Grooved-edge boards are held down with hidden clips, so there are no screw heads on top. Square-edge boards on steps and edges are face-fixed with colour-matched screws or plugs.

  5. 05

    Fascia and cladding boards

Matching fascia boards cover the frame edge, and the same boards can clad steps, stairs and benches, as on the Birchgrove stair.

What to think about with composite

Dundas · composite deck around an in-ground spa
  1. Heat in the sun

Darker colours absorb more heat. On a west-facing deck or around a pool, a lighter colour is kinder to bare feet.

  2. The frame underneath

Composite boards usually need joists closer together than older timber frames have, plus airflow under the deck. On a low deck we plan the ventilation gaps at the edges.

  3. Curves and shapes

Composite can follow a curve, but it takes extra framing and cutting, as on our North Ryde and Bellevue Hill decks.

  4. Colour ranges change

Brands drop and add colours. If you might extend the deck or add a bench later, keep a few spare boards.

  5. Approval

The board material doesn't change whether a deck needs approval. Its height, size and position on the lot do, along with heritage and bush fire listings.

  • “I've found my new carpenter! Haz did a fabulous job of doing all new balustrading on my back deck. He was very precise with his fitting and measurements and also went out of his way to help me with 2 other little jobs I needed to do before selling my house. What he did for me was a tremendous help and I'm so grateful. Look no further than Haz. He is the kindest and the best!”

  • “I would recommend Timbaland to my friends, and would try to get them again if work later comes up. We got them to do our backyard deck. And Haz has been professional and easy to deal with from the beginning. He explains the work and his pricing really well. He’s efficient and his quality of work is very commendable. Extremely happy with their work.”

Questions

What customers ask us

Does composite decking need oiling?

No. A wash with water and a soft brush keeps it clean. Grease, leaf and tannin marks come off more easily if they are cleaned soon after they land.

Is composite decking hot to walk on?

It can be, especially darker boards in direct summer sun. Lighter colours stay cooler. If the deck faces west or sits by a pool, stand on a few boards in the sun before you choose a colour.

Can composite boards go on my existing timber frame?

Sometimes. The frame has to be sound and level, with joists close enough together for the board maker's guide. Many older frames have joists too far apart, so we check the spacing and condition before we quote and add joists where needed.

Which composite brand do you recommend?

It depends on the look you want, the colour range and how the board is fixed. We have used Trex, NewTechWood, Eva Last, Modelo and Dura Life on Sydney jobs, and can show you boards and photos of finished decks in each.
