About stairs and balustrades
Built to the rules, made to match the deck
Stairs and balustrades are the parts of a deck or balcony people use most and notice least, until a tread goes soft or a balustrade starts to move. We build new outdoor stairs, replace old ones and put new balustrades on decks, balconies and stairs, on their own or with a new deck.
Stairs and balustrades are safety work, so the building code sets the rules: consistent riser heights and tread depths, handrails where they're required, and balustrades of the right height with no gaps a child can slip through or climb. We build to those rules and explain them as we go.
A stair can match the deck it serves. On our Lane Cove job the stair is boxed and clad in the same merbau as the deck edge, so the two read as one piece. An open stair, with the treads set between visible stringers, is lighter and suits a simple garden stair.

Stairs and balustrades we build
- 01
External stairs
New timber stairs, including boxed stairs clad in decking boards, open stairs and stairs with landings.
- 02
Replacement stairs
An old or unsafe stair taken out and rebuilt, with the footings and the landing it meets checked first.
- 03
Deck and balcony balustrades
Timber, wire and composite-clad balustrades on decks and balconies, new or replacing old ones.
- 04
Stair handrails and balustrades
Handrails and balustrades along a flight of stairs, set to the stair's own height rule.
Before we price it
What changes a stair or balustrade job

Height
A deck or landing more than a metre above the ground below needs a balustrade. On much higher decks, the rules also limit horizontal parts that could be climbed.
Stair geometry
Every riser and tread in a flight has to match, within the limits the code sets. Fitting that between two fixed levels sometimes means adding a landing or turning the stair.
Wire balustrades
Tensioned wire has to stay tight enough to meet the gap rules. It stretches over time and needs re-tensioning.
Under an old stair
Taking out an old stair can show rot in the stringers, posts or the landing it meets. We tell you before doing any extra work.

Does my deck need a balustrade?
If the deck floor is more than a metre above the ground below, yes. The balustrade has to be at least a metre high above the deck floor, with no openings large enough for a child's head to pass through. Stairs have their own height rule. We measure your deck and tell you what it needs.
How high does a stair balustrade need to be?
Along a flight of stairs, at least 865 mm above the line of the tread nosings, with the same rule on gaps. On landings, decks and balconies it is at least a metre. We set the heights out when we measure.
Can you replace an old external staircase?
Yes. We take out the old stair, check the footings and the landing it connects to, and build a new one with even risers and a compliant handrail. Boxed or clad stairs can match the deck, like our Lane Cove and Birchgrove stairs.
Can the stairs match my deck?
Yes. The treads and any cladding can be in the same boards as the deck, timber or composite, and a boxed stair can be clad to match the deck's edge, as on our Lane Cove job.
