Trex decking in Sydney

Trex is a capped composite board that keeps its colour without oiling. We have used it on a balcony, stair and rooftop terrace in Birchgrove, a curved deck in Bellevue Hill and decks in Sandringham, Botany and North Ryde.

About trex decking

Trex is on five of our composite jobs.

In Birchgrove we used Trex boards for an upper balcony deck, to clad an external stair and to build an L-shaped bench on the rooftop terrace. Using one board for the deck, the stair and the bench ties the levels together.

In Bellevue Hill we built a curved Trex deck with wide steps and planter boxes. A curve in composite takes extra framing and careful cutting at the edge, and the fascia has to follow the same line.

In Sandringham and Botany we built Trex decks with Deckmasters Sydney: a grey deck and wide steps at a two-storey house, and a raised deck under an existing roof with two sets of steps. In North Ryde a small Trex deck fits a tight courtyard.

Trex boards have a hard outer shell over a composite core. They resist stains and fading better than bare timber and never need oiling. Like other composites, they come with their own clips and installation guide, which sets the joist spacing and gaps, so we build the frame to suit.

We're a TrexPro® partner: Trex Australia lists Timbaland Carpentry in its builder directory as a TrexPro contractor, a partner since 2024.

Trex choices

  1. 01

    Board ranges

Trex makes several board ranges with different surfaces and finishes. Range names and what is sold in Australia change, so we confirm the current options with you.

  2. 02

    Colours

Each range comes in a set of colours, from greys to warm browns. We bring boards so you can see them in your own light.

  3. 03

    Hidden fasteners

Grooved-edge boards are fixed with hidden clips, leaving a clean surface with no screw heads.

  4. 04

    Fascia, steps and benches

Matching fascia boards finish the deck edge and can clad stairs and benches, as in Birchgrove.

Before we price it

What to think about with Trex

  1. Joist spacing

Trex boards need joists closer together than many older timber decks have. An existing frame often needs extra joists before it can take them.

  2. Heat

Darker colours get hot in direct sun. On a sunny terrace or beside a pool, stand on a board in the sun before choosing.

  3. Expansion gaps

Composite boards grow and shrink with temperature, so the end gaps are set to the Trex guide for the conditions on the day.

  4. Height and access

Upper balconies and rooftops mean carrying boards up stairs and working at height, which affects how long the job takes.

  • “I've found my new carpenter! Haz did a fabulous job of doing all new balustrading on my back deck. He was very precise with his fitting and measurements and also went out of his way to help me with 2 other little jobs I needed to do before selling my house. What he did for me was a tremendous help and I'm so grateful. Look no further than Haz. He is the kindest and the best!”

  • “I would recommend Timbaland to my friends, and would try to get them again if work later comes up. We got them to do our backyard deck. And Haz has been professional and easy to deal with from the beginning. He explains the work and his pricing really well. He’s efficient and his quality of work is very commendable. Extremely happy with their work.”

Questions

What customers ask us

Is Trex better than other composite brands?

It is one good option among several. Trex, NewTechWood, Eva Last and other brands differ in colour, surface texture, clip system and cost. We can show you boards and photos of our jobs in each, and help you compare.

Can Trex go on a balcony or rooftop?

Often, yes. The frame has to sit over the waterproofing without damaging it and leave a clear path for water to drain. On our Birchgrove job, both the balcony and the rooftop terrace were finished in Trex.

Can a Trex deck be curved?

Yes. The boards and fascia can follow a curved edge with extra framing and careful cutting, as on our Bellevue Hill deck.

Does Trex fade?

All decking changes a little in strong sun, but capped boards like Trex hold their colour far better than bare timber. Regular washing keeps the surface looking even.
