About colorbond pergolas

One of our customers had a pergola roof wrecked in a storm.

We replaced it with Colorbond and reinforced the frame underneath so it could carry the new roof. When an old pergola roof fails, the cause is often the fixings or the frame rather than the sheets, so we check those first.

Colorbond is pre-painted steel roofing, made in several profiles and a range of colours. On a pergola it gives full shade and rain cover, and it sits well against a house with a metal or tiled roof. It is louder in heavy rain than tiles and makes the area underneath darker, so we talk through placement and colour with you.

We build or strengthen the timber frame, lay the roofing with enough fall, and flash it to the house. The gutter and downpipe are planned with the roof; where the downpipe joins the stormwater, a licensed plumber makes that connection.

Colorbond roof options

  1. 01

    Corrugated

The classic wave profile. It suits older and newer houses alike.

  2. 02

    Ribbed profiles

Square-ribbed sheets give a flatter, more modern line and suit low-pitched roofs.

  3. 03

    Insulated panels

Panels with a foam core between steel skins. Worth considering where rain noise or heat under the roof matters.

  4. 04

    Colour

Lighter colours reflect more heat; darker colours hide dirt. Many people match the house roof or gutters.

  5. 05

    Replacement roofs

New Colorbond on an existing frame, with the frame strengthened where it needs it.

Choose your roof

The roof decides how the space under a pergola feels. Pick one, then switch between sun and rain to see what it does.

What changes a Colorbond pergola

  1. The frame

A steel roof is heavier and catches more wind than open rafters. Older frames often need extra rafters, bigger beams or new tie-downs.

  2. Fall and drainage

The roof needs enough slope to shed water, and a gutter sized for the area. The water has to go somewhere sensible, not onto the neighbour's side or back against the house.

  3. Light

A solid roof makes the rooms behind it darker. A translucent sheet or two, or a gap at the house wall, can help.

  4. Approval

A roofed pergola can still be exempt if it meets the size, height and setback limits. A larger roofed structure, or one on a heritage or bush fire prone lot, usually needs approval.

  • “I've found my new carpenter! Haz did a fabulous job of doing all new balustrading on my back deck. He was very precise with his fitting and measurements and also went out of his way to help me with 2 other little jobs I needed to do before selling my house. What he did for me was a tremendous help and I'm so grateful. Look no further than Haz. He is the kindest and the best!”

And Haz has been professional and easy to deal with from the beginning. He explains the work and his pricing really well. He’s efficient and his quality of work is very commendable. Extremely happy with their work.”

Questions

What customers ask us

Can you replace a storm-damaged pergola roof?

Yes. For one customer we swapped a storm-wrecked roof for Colorbond and strengthened the frame to carry it. We start by checking which parts of the frame are still sound and which need replacing or strengthening.

Is a Colorbond pergola noisy in the rain?

Louder than a tiled roof, yes. Insulated roof panels cut the noise and the heat under the roof. If the pergola sits outside a bedroom, that is worth weighing up.

Can a Colorbond roof go on my existing timber pergola?

Sometimes. Open-rafter pergolas usually weren't built for a roof's weight and wind load, so the frame often needs strengthening first. We check it on site and tell you what it needs.

Who connects the downpipe?

Connecting a downpipe into the stormwater system is plumbing work, so a licensed plumber does that part. We plan the gutter and downpipe position with the roof so the connection is straightforward.
