About stairs, balustrades and repairs
Not every job is a new deck.
We replace external staircases, put new balustrades on decks and balconies, replace rotted fascia boards and repair the framing under decks and stairs. Recent work includes a raised merbau deck in Lane Cove with a boxed stair clad in merbau, a composite-clad external stair in Birchgrove and a wire balustrade on a raised deck in Wahroonga.
Stairs and balustrades are safety work, so the building code sets the rules: consistent riser heights and tread depths, handrails where they're required, and balustrades of the right height with no gaps a child can slip through or climb. We build to those rules and explain them as we go.
Repairs start with finding the cause. Rotted fascia usually means water from a blocked or leaking gutter; a bouncy deck or stair often means a rotten post, bearer or joist. We fix what's damaged and tell you what caused it, so the repair lasts.

Carpentry we do
- 01
External stairs
New and replacement timber stairs, including boxed stairs clad in decking boards, open stairs and stairs with landings.
- 02
Balustrades
Timber, wire and composite-clad balustrades on decks, balconies and stairs, new or replacing old ones.
- 03
Fascia replacement
Rotted or damaged fascia boards replaced, with the gutter taken off and refitted, or replaced by a roof plumber if it's worn out.
- 04
Framing repairs
Rotten posts, bearers, joists and stair stringers replaced under decks, stairs and balconies.
- 05
Re-boarding
New boards on a sound frame, so a tired deck or stair is safe and even underfoot again.
Before we price it
What changes a stair or balustrade job
Height
A deck or landing more than a metre above the ground below needs a balustrade. On much higher decks, the rules also limit horizontal parts that could be climbed.
Stair geometry
Every riser and tread in a flight has to match, within the limits the code sets. Fitting that between two fixed levels sometimes means adding a landing or turning the stair.
Wire balustrades
Tensioned wire has to stay tight enough to meet the gap rules. It stretches over time and needs re-tensioning.
Hidden damage
Once boards come off, repairs can uncover more rot than expected. We tell you before doing any extra work.

How a job runs
How a stair or repair job runs
Step 01
Send photos
Photos of the stair, balustrade or damage, and how high it is off the ground, help us understand the job.
Step 02
Inspect
We check the framing, fixings and footings, and find what caused the damage.
Step 03
Quote
A written quote for the repair or replacement, with any likely hidden work explained up front.
Step 04
Repair and build
Damaged parts are removed and replaced, and new stairs and balustrades are built to the code.
Does my deck need a balustrade?
If the deck floor is more than a metre above the ground below, yes. The balustrade has to be at least a metre high above the deck floor, with no openings large enough for a child's head to pass through. Stairs have their own height rule. We measure your deck and tell you what it needs.
Can you replace an old external staircase?
Yes. We take out the old stair, check the footings and the landing it connects to, and build a new one with even risers and a compliant handrail. Boxed or clad stairs can match the deck, like our Lane Cove and Birchgrove stairs.
Can you fix rotten fascia boards?
Yes. We replace the damaged lengths, or the full run if needed, and refit the gutter. If the gutter caused the rot, we tell you so it can be fixed too.
My deck feels bouncy. Can it be repaired?
Often. Bounce usually comes from undersized or rotten joists, loose bearers or posts that have sunk. We look under the deck, find the cause and quote to repair the frame, or tell you if a rebuild makes more sense.
