Building a deck in St Ives: what we check
We look at these at the measure, so the price you get is the price of the job.

Slope
Much of St Ives sits on a slope running down to Middle Harbour Creek and Kuring-gai Creek. A deck on a falling block needs deeper footings, bracing and often a balustrade, so we look at the fall of the ground before we price it.
Bush fire
About 58% of St Ives is mapped as bush fire prone, mostly along Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve and Garigal National Park. On a mapped block the bush fire attack level (BAL) decides which boards and framing a deck can use, so we check your address before we quote.
Heritage
St Ives has no heritage conservation area, but 40 places are listed as heritage items. If your house is one, a deck can need approval it otherwise wouldn't, so we check the listing first.
Approval
Many decks in NSW are exempt development when they meet the height, size and setback limits. We tell you at the measure whether yours does; if it doesn't, approval comes from Ku-ring-gai Council or a registered certifier.
